Childhood Memories

On Thursday Janet and I visited the area where she was born and the Herd farm where she spent her childhood years. The area is located on Bar Creek in Clay County and is really beautiful. Janet really enjoyed the visit and I was happy to be with her. The following pictures do not really do not capture the quiet beauty of this lovely area.

The barn and well box are the only structures left from the farm.

Quiet beauty

This field was adjacent to a log house located to the right where Janet and her family lived. Janet remembers watching her dad plow the field with his team of mules.

This barn was located on the Herd farm and Janet remembers her father working on the roof with a rope tied to him for safety.

The tree in the foreground is a pear tree that stood in the yard. The tree still bears fruit and we were able to pick up several large pears that had fallen from it.

This is the farm where her Grandfather and Grandmother lived. The small building behind Janet is where her Grandfather had a small country store. The barn was quite ornate.

Madeline and I did a lot of work on the playhouse this weekend and she put it to good use. Sophia we can't wait for you to come and play in it also. We sure enjoyed having Madeline spend the weekend with us!

We sure had a fun time this weekend at the cabin. We missed having our entire family however we know they will be here soon.

We:

Enjoyed some Boating!

Enjoyed some Grandpa - Granddaughter time toghether!

Enjoyed some good food and family fellowship around the fire!

Did some fishing and even caught a couple nice fish- something unusual for me!

Worked on a playhouse for our granddaughters! Plenty of work to do yet as you can see.

Kid proofed the dock! We are ready for the little ones!

In addition, we enjoyed time with the Grandmothers, went to a cookout, (the food was super) and enjoyed having our family at the cabin! The little one caught at least 10 fish- what an angler she is!

Summer of 1967

ROTC was mandatory for freshman and sophomores at EKU in the late 60's and we had the choice of leaving the program or sign up for the advanced course during our junior and senior years. The advanced course included a commitment to go to the Army as an officer upon graduation. With likely service in Vietnam facing me upon graduation I decided to continue with the advanced course.

Between my junior and senior years I attended officer basic training in Indiantown Gap Pa. I will never forget the words of encouragement from our Drill Sergeant the first morning there - "you better pay attention and learn to be a good officer because I don't want some dumb 2LT getting my good soldiers killed in Vietnam". He was serious too.

We travelled past Indiantown Gap on our way to Providence RI last week and I couldn't resist stopping to see if the post was still there and to re-live those good but difficult memories. I was happy to see the post had changed little and the old white barracks and training facilities were still there.

The training was realistic and hard and I got injured on the infiltration course and ended up in the hospital at Valley Forge Army Hospital in Philadelphia for three weeks with soldiers who had been wounded in Vietnam. Due to this my 9 week course continued for another 3 weeks however I graduated near the top of my class and returned in time for my senior year.

Life's experiences form the person we are and I am thankful for my time at Fort Indiantown Gap and in the US Army later.

We sure enjoyed our visit with the Sophia, Mark and Rebecca last weekend.

The weather was nice and we were able to get outside to enjoy it. Sophia enjoyed her "pinto" thanks to the Hites.

We all enjoyed working on the "100 wishes quilt" for Claire. We have been waiting for her so long and can't wait until she is with us.

We went to the park and later watched the Wildcats win an NCAA game.

It always makes for a great weekend when the Wildcats win and we can be with our family! We can't wait to do it again.

Sewing Lesson

We sure enjoyed having Madeline visit us this weekend. We had lots of fun watching the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics and playing with the paint program. Janet sure enjoyed her sewing lesson this morning.

Madeline's Basketball Games

The last two Saturdays, Janet and I have had the pleasure of attending two of Madeline's basketball games. The girls try hard and are showing improvement in the short time they have played. Madeline really enjoys the game and is focused on the game and having a good time, which is what's it is all about. We love our granddaughter!

We had a good trip to Charlotte and also enjoyed a good weekend with our family.
We had a rainy Saturday but enjoyed time inside. Sophia enjoyed her PaPaw and MaMaw. We played hide and seek and just had a good time together.

My Friend Wilkie

Wilkie Saylor - January 2, 1946 to August 22, 2009
I lost a high school classmate, cousin and friend this weekend when he died suddenly at 63.
Wilkie and I were two of 27 classmates who granduated from tiny Red Bird High School in 1964. Wilkie was an excellent basketball player and a friend to everyone. After high school he went into the Army and served his country honorably and with pride in Veitnam. Wilkie was very patriotic and spent a lot of time later in life showing his respect and appreciation to our men and women in the service.
Wilkie, I salute you my friend. May you rest in peace.

Madeline's Happy Hideout House

Madeline has been with Janet and I at the lake this weekend. We built a lean-to (she calls it a "structure" - perhaps the engineer in her) and she really enjoyed using it as her hideway and place to paint pictures. Janet got her some paint and brushes and she has enjoyed painting.

We certainly enjoyed having Mark, for a short time, Rebecca and Sophia this past two weeks. We had a very nice dinner with everyone the first night ,went sightseeing, chilled out at home and had a great weekend at the cabin.Janie and Madeline spend a lot of time with us.It was great seeing our two daughters together a lot and having our granddaughters spend a lot of time together. We decided that we have the two nicest daughters and the sweetest and prettiest granddaughters anywhere!

Janet and I had a very good time in Nashville this past weekend. We enjoyed visting the Country Music Museum, took a tour of the RCA recording studio where Elvis and many country stars made their records. The piano I am sitting at was in the recording studio and was used by Elvis when many of his hit records were made. We had a nice dinner and later went to the Grand Ole Opry and saw several of the older country singers who can still belt out a good country song. Our treat was to see Steve Martin, the actor, play a banjo and sing on the Opry. We needed a weekend doing something different and this worked out very well. I'm for meeting the family there again sometime and doing some of this again.

Janet and I sure enjoyed visiting with Mark and Rebecca and spending lots of time with Sophia this week.

Sophia is really enjoying her nice new deck. She found a tub of water and climbed in.. of course thats what a deck is for!

We played with her in her playroom, ran like a cho-cho train around the house with her (we got tired but she sure didnt), read lots of books and just had a good old time hanging out.

Sophia chilled out while watching the new Dora videos that Madeline and her Aunt Janie sent to her. She really enjoys Dora and yelling "Swiper".

Sophia has developed quite a vocabulary. We were amazed at all the new words she has learned.

This was a very good week for PaPaw and MaMaw to spend time with Sophia and of course Mark and Rebecca. We enjoyed it immensly and can't wait to see her again.

Fun Weekend with Madeline

This was our "Madeline weekend". We went to her soccer game on Friday and she spent the night with us while Steven and Janie were out enjoying an evening together.

The soccer game was exciting as Madeline scored a goal!! Unfortunatley my camera was set on the wrong setting and my soccer pictures are too dark:)

Isnt the patchwork dog cute --- Madeline did all of the art and it turned out super.

Madeline spent the night with us and we were treated with dinner from her "restrant".. She had menus and the whole nine yards.. Quite an imagination this little girl has!

We were happy to have her with us and that Janie and Steven got to go out and have a nice evening! Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary rolled into one!

Fun Weekend with Our Family

Janet and I sure enjoyed this weekend with our family at the cabin. There is nothing better than to hear the words Grandpa, PaPaw, Grandma and Mamaw all with a loving smile. We visited the Grandparents (GreatGrandparents) had some great food, thanks to Janet and the girls and just enhoyed hanging out on a rainy weekend. Over too soon but we look forward to doing it again soon. We love you guys!

We had a chance to visit our "secret hiding place" and place some "signs" designed to confuse others who may be looking to find it.

Of course there was a "cabin" in our cabin made from chairs, blankets and pillows. Grandpa and Grandma assisted in this effort and enjoyed every minute of it!
We really enjoyed having our Granddaughter this weekend and will have to do it soon again when the weather warms up. She loves nature and enjoys being with Grandpa and Grandma and of course we love it!

Winter Wonderland - I Guess?

This has been quite a weather week. Tuesday started with rain and before the

night was over we had around two inches of ice with another several inches of

snow on top of it- then more ice later in the day. I spent a night in my office

because I didnt want to attempt to drive home. Beautiful to look at

but hard on the roads, trees and the electric lines!

Our nice birch tree in the front yard was split in half. We hope it recovers!

Our big tree in back - not sure if there is damage to the

house or not. Half of it ended up in our neghbors yard. Snow is

fun --- but ice is not!

It was a good day to stay inside and do a nice big puzzle. Janet

and Madeline had a very nice day together!

We were lucky as our power was only out one night

(it wasn't so bad with the gas fireplace)

while Steven, Madeline and Janie's electricity was out all week!

All is well however as none of the family was injured

or anything so we Thank God for the beautiful winter scenery.

We are ready for the ice to melt however!

New Years Day 2009

We enjoyed a quiet New Years Eve and Day with our granddaughter. These pictures are not in order however we had pizza, wrote a story ( I "authored" and she "illustrated") and went to bed early. Today we had a nice breakfast, hung out and later went to the park for a walk. I can't think of a better way to spend the first day of the year!

It was a very nice, quite New Years day. We love our granddaughter!!

We really enjoyed our Christmas dinner with Madeline, Janie and Steven!

Madeline really enjoyed presents from the Radicchis and her Grandpa and Grandma. We had a delicious dinner of prime rib, Steven's special corn recipe and Janie's traditional fettucine. It was a wonderful day with our loved ones and really "made" our Christmas.

Christmas Gifts!

Janet and I went to Church and heard a wonderful sermon entitled Christmas Eve in Heaven. I dont ever recall a sermon with this type emphasis on the birth of Jesus and it was very good.

Later we opened presents from each other and from Mark, Sophia and Rebecca. We received two very special gifts from them:

Janet (and I) were very pleased with a calendar that includes pictures of our family neatly placed in the month in which they were taken.

I could not be more grateful for (or more proud of) the gift that I received from Mark that he got in Iraq for me. The pictures (below) do not do justice to this nicely framed collection that includes a folded flag that flew over Phoenix Base in the Internation Zone in Baghdad, Irag in July 2008; a Certificate of Thanks for Support of our Men and Women in the Military and a mounted MNSTC -Iraq coin. This means a lot to me!!

On Christmas day we are visiting with my Mom, my brothers and sisters and look forward to it.

We are also looking forward to dinner and another special Christmas celebration with Steven, Madeline and Janie on Friday!

Sophia's First Birthday!

This was a very special weekend since it was Sophia's first birthday and we were able to be there. It was especially nice to see Mark's family that we hadn't seen in 10+ years and to spend time with some of Mark and Rebecca's nice friends. We enjoyed making the trip with Madeline and Janie!!

I promised Madeline a few weeks ago that I would take her to get a toy to add to her "My Little Petshop" collection. Of course, she never forgets anything and we finally found time to go out to dinner and to get something. I gave her a budget to spend before going. I have to say that I was very impressed with the way she handled the limit as she kept saying things "now Grandpa you know" that we can "only get small or mid-size toys" or we "can't afford big toy's today". She also said that she had an "imagination" and would make a "Little Petshop Hotel" out of the display case that we ended up getting. She also was sure to point out larger items that she would like for her birthday and Christmas. A lot of kids her age would have asked for the larger items now. This little girl has very good reasoning and negotiation skills as she thinks ahead.

We went to Dairy Queen later and she was very well behaved and went out of her way to make sure that Grandpa was well taken care of.

I know that I am just an "old softie" but times like last night mean so much to me as I love my granddaughters so much.

I did'nt take any pictures to post with this however I just wanted to tell how much this meant to me and how proud I am of Madeline!

How Do We Find The Secret Hiding Place?

In the forest, a sign that directs one to the "secret hiding place" is a necessity. Madeline took care of that prior to her visit to make sure those needing access such as her Grandapa Grandmother and Mom could find their way. She also displayed "her favorite flag while doing so. What a girl!

Windsor Garden and the Saga of Mr. Groundhog

We will be having a delicious supper from our little garden tomorrow and I can't wait. In spite of Mr Groundhog we were able to harvest beans, cucumbers, zuchinni, cabbage and tomatoes. We have attempted to catch the groundhog (again) but have not been successful. Janet had some new beans growing nicely until he helped himself to them. A funny story - we purchased a trap, as shown in one of the pictures, earlier in the year. We put it out and caught him the first day. We took him down to road a mile or so and turned him loose in some woods. Guess what, a few days later he shows back up in our yard after having travelled across a 4 lane highway and past businesses and houses. . If we can catch him again we will take him to the cabin so he can fish or do whatever he wants. We just want him out of our garden.

I finally found a few minutes to post pictures of our vacation to Destin. I had so many good pictures that it was difficult to select the ones I wanted to post. I may not have found the best ones, but what the heck they were all great! Spending time with our family was the best part of all. Seeing Madeline and Sophia experience the ocean for the first time is beyond words!

The week ended all too quickly however Janie and Madeline joined us at the lake for the weekend and we had a wonderful time boating, exploring with Madeline, watching Sophia in the baby pool and on the boat for the first time and visiting family. We want to do it all over very soon!! We love you guys!!

Memorial Day is a special day of Thanks to the men and women who have and are serving our country! We were able to enjoy it with our family and it was a very special time together. We especially enjoyed having our two daughters and granddaughters together. We heard a great sermon and music at church and had a very nice picnic with fried chicken! Were it not for those who have died defending our freedom, times like these may not have been possbile!

We Enjoyed Our Weekend!

Janet and I really enjoyed our quick trip to Atlanta this weekend. We enjoyed seeing Rebecca, Mark and Sophia, went to a UK basketball game and have a chance to go to First Friday. Our visit to First Friday was very heartwarming as we had a chance to meet some of Mark and Rebecca's very nice friends and hear adoption stories that brought a tear of joy to our eyes. The BB game was lots of fun and I enjoyed meeting Mike and one of their friends who recently retired and is a huge UK fan. Sophia is getting stronger every day and sweeter. The pictures speak for themselves.

It was amazing to see the change in Sophia during this visit. We hadnt seen her in over a month and it was a pleasure to see how attentive she is and to see her smile. I recently had a chance to have lunch with our new Kentucky Wildcat coach, Billie Clyde Gillespie. I was very impressed with his down to earth style and friendliness. Although UK lost a game to a small school last week I believe he will bring back great times for UK basketball once he has had a chance to recruit the type players he needs. He is a really nice guy!

We sure enjoyed having our granddaughter visit us for a weekend at the cabin. She was busy creating a nice pot of wildflowers and helping her grandfather with a gravel project. The weather was very nice and a hint of fall was in the air. We are looking forward to our second granddaughter very soon and can't wait to have her visit us at the cabin as well.

Janet and I really enjoyed our visit with Mark and Rebecca this weekend. We went on a tour of the hospital and were very impressed with the facilities and professionalism of the staff. This gave us comfort that Rebecca will be very well cared for. Sophia is very well prepared for with a very nice nursery stocked with everything one could think of. One thing is for sure, Sophia will have lots to wear:) We are looking forward to our return visit in early October when God will bless our family with another granddaughter! Madeline's First Fish

Madeline caught her first (and second) fish this weekend at the cabin. Janet and I sure enjoyed spending time with her and it was fun to watch her reactions when a fish got on her line. We went back down this morning and she caught another one the first time she threw her line into the water. I thing this girl has natural fishing talents!

It was great to have our family join us at our cabin at the lake this weekend. Family joined us for a very nice shower for little Sophia. We especially enjoyed having both of Rebecca and janie's Grandmothers with us. We were pleased to have many of Janet's brothers,sisters, nieces and nephews. My sister Violet, her husband Gary, daughter LeAnn and granddaughter McKenzie also joined us. I am hoping that Janie or Rebecca got some pictures of her. A very nice family weekend that we will remember for a long time.

Janie gave me permission to post my pictures of Madeline's special day. She was such a little lady during this ceremony and everything went very well. We enjoyed a nice family get together later with very good food. Good job Janie and Steven! We were very proud of Madeline today!

Huber Farms

Janie,Madeline and I had a very nice day at Huber Farms in Indiana. We had a very nice lunch, picked blackberries (Rebecca we have some for you when you come home later in the month) and visited their petting zoo. Madeline really enjoyed it all and Janie and I each had a very relaxing vacation day.

We really enjoyed having Madeline with us at the cabin this weekend. She got a chance to spend time with both of her Great Grandmothers. Unfortunately we didnt get any pictures of Mamaw Baker and her on Friday night however I was too busy with my new car, whoopee. She enjoyed herself and so did we!!

Dinner With Madeline

Yesterday evening Madeline and I went out for a "night on the town". We went to Long John Silvers, which was her choice. During our meal she decided, without any prompting from me, that she would explain the word "infinity" to me. I was amazed at her explanation and knowledge of what the word meant. She was such a good little lady that we went to Walmart and purchased a toy that she said she has wanted for a long time, a small "little pony" game of some sort. We went to Baskin Robins for desert and had fun getting ice cream. I really enjoyed my time with her!

We are off to the cabin this weekend and Madeline is going down with us. I am picking up my "new" car.

We had a very nice afternoon in the Bernheim forest near Bardstown, KY. Later Mark, Rebecca and I went visit the Jim Beam Distillery (no samples!) which is nearby. Later we had another great dinner! This was a super weekend!

We really enjoyed our week in Chicago. As you can see by the pictures Janet shopped then shopped some more.... We had lots of great food (too much) met some very nice people and really enjoyed the sights. Janet and I took a tour with the group one day and Janet enjoyed a "taste of Chicago" tour the next day. The city is very clean and a great place to visit. Millenium Park is really nice.

We had a very nice Saturday afternoon trip to Louisville with Janie and Madeline. We had a nice lunch and hung out with Madeline at the mall while Janie took advantage of late winter sales. We later went to ToysRus to let Madeline pick out toys with the money she had saved.
